Rodrigo Garcia Dutra (b. 1981, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lives and works between London and São Paulo.
Rodrigo Garcia Dutra plays with light, urban architecture and natural landscapes through video projections inherently 3-dimensional in their conception and realization. His work aims to cross the boundaries between video art and sculpture, and reflects his interest in Modernism. The video is usually projected within or on an installation (usually made with found, recycled or cheap materials), which, besides being integral part of the work, enhances its 3-dimensional connotations. Sometimes the work is enriched by sound. His works often create the illusions of infinite and atemporal spaces, non-dimensional architectures, where the presence of a rhythmical sound evokes the dynamic of the ‘recreated' spaces.
Rodrigo has been involved in a bewildering variety of projects across the globe. His work is highly collaborative. As part of the collective “assume vivid astro focus” (avaf) he has participated in screenings/ performances/ events at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Whitechapel Gallery, South London Gallery, São Paulo Biennial, MOT Tokyo, Art Basel Miami Beach and at festivals in Brussels, Rome, Berlin and New York. In Brazil he has collaborated with artists and curators on several gallery exhibitions and installations in São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. He has also taken part in performances with avaf at Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, and as part of PopRally organised by Museum of Modern Art New York.
